Saúde Criança Renascer
Renascer was founded in 1991 by Dr Vera Cordeiro, as a non-profit organization, with no political or religious affiliation. The constant admission/re-admission cycle of the children treated at the Hospital da Lagoa, a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil, was cause for indignation among the health professionals in the hospital. Many children were returning to the hospital after being released, often in more serious condition, some would even die.

Our Mission
To provide assistance to children and families from Hospital da Lagoa, who live below the poverty line, with the objective of promoting self-sufficiency and breaking the admission/readmission cycle.
Our Vision
To transform Renascer into a model of reference, stimulating the reproduction of its methodology in Brazil and worldwide, where similar health and poverty challenges are faced.

Integral Approach
Traditional medicine, not only in Brazil but also all over the world, focuses on the diagnostics and treatment of the illness ignoring the psychological and social conditions of the patients. As a result, there are high rates of re-hospitalization because the same illness or other illnesses are caused by or can be worsen by poor living conditions. By addressing the family’s socio-economic environment, Renascer is effectively applying the integral concept of health and not just being limited to the traditional “curative” medicine. Renascer’s goal is to target the most impoverished families and give them the ability (job skills, information, self-esteem) to provide a healthy environment for their children and the whole family.
